Transitioning from a tradition that eagerly ordains women to understanding the historical and theological necessity of a male-only Catholic priesthood required a complete shift in how I viewed Church authority and the sacraments.

The Heart of the Matter

In Persona Christi

As a pastor, I viewed leadership through the lens of functionality, capability, and equality. However, upon investigating Catholicism, I learned that the priesthood isn’t merely an administrative or leadership role. Catholic theology teaches that a priest acts in persona Christi (in the person of Christ) during the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Christ chose to become incarnate as a male, and he specifically chose twelve men to be his apostles at the Last Supper. The Church views this deliberate, historical choice by Jesus not as a reflection of ancient cultural bias, but as a perpetual, divine norm.

The Nuptial Mystery

This realization led me to understand the “nuptial” mystery of the Church. In scripture, Christ is the Bridegroom and the Church (all believers, both male and female) is the Bride. The male priest physically and symbolically represents Christ the Bridegroom in his relationship with the Church. Recognizing this symbolism helped me see that the all-male priesthood is not about the exclusion of women, nor is it a statement on the dignity or value of women. In fact, the highest human being in the Catholic faith is Mary, a woman who was never ordained.

Realizing True Spiritual Authority

Leaving my ministry was painful, but studying the Catechism and the Early Church Fathers revealed a beautiful, sacramental reality that transcended my own preconceived notions. I found that true spiritual authority in Catholicism isn’t measured by who stands at the altar, but by one’s submission to the design and will of Christ.
